Meet the Speakers

Alan SaxeAlan Saxe

Alan Saxe is Senior Vice President, Business and Legal Affairs for OWN: Oprah Winfrey Network. Alan has a wide array of business, legal, and creative experience as counsel in the entertainment sector. Mr. Saxe oversees all negotiations and legal matters for the network, including all talent, production labor and digital agreements. Additionally, he oversees all of OWN’s legal and business concerns including the negotiations associated with acquisitions, financing and international distribution.

Prior to joining OWN Saxe worked at Warner Horizon Television, following more than two decades of work within the Warner Bros. family of companies. As Senior Vice President of Business and Legal Affairs, he ran the business and legal affairs for Warner Horizon Television, the Warner Bros. division responsible for primetime alternative programming for both the network and cable and scripted dramatic series programming for cable. Prior to his work there, he served as Executive Vice President of Telepictures Productions and Executive Vice President of Business and Legal Affairs for Warner Bros. Domestic Television Distribution. He began his career as an employment and labor litigator in private practice.

Saxe holds a Juris Doctorate and a Masters of Business Administration from the University of San Diego with a dual license to practice law in California and New York. He received his bachelor’s degree in Management from State University of New York Binghamton.

He lives in Calabasas, CA with his wife and two children.

Juliette PowellJuliette Powell

Listed in Forbes as the ‘ultimate connector’ in 2010, Juliette Powell is an author, digital media consultant and co-founder of The Gathering Think Tank, an innovation forum at the heart of digital technology, media and business. A featured technology futurist, social commentator and keynote speaker, Powell’s current clients include Research in Motion, The Knight Foundation, The Minister of Finance and Cirque du Soleil. Powell is the author of 33 Million People in the Room: How to create, influence and Run a Successful Business with Social Networking, (January 2009, Financial Times Press). Powell writes about the patterns and practices of successful business leaders who bank on social networking to win. Powell’s background includes a decade of experience in broadcast television as well as in interactive/new media content and formats, and a lifelong interest in people and community-building. With her deep knowledge of the people and technologies at the forefront of social media, Powell has gained a solid reputation for discovering the latest developments and distilling their social and business implications.

Soniya MongaSoniya Monga

Soniya Monga's background includes roles at Morgan Stanley and Microsoft Canada, where she developed digital and social media strategies for technology decision makers. She is a Contributor at Techvibes.com, co-host of Perpetual Radio’s Social Media Show and is leading the strategy for The Maple Leaf Digital Lounge at the South by Southwest conference to bring visibility to Canadian startups and entrepreneurs. Soniya recently joined LinkedIn Canada where she works with enterprise and consumer-focused marketers. She is a graduate of McGill University’s Economics and International & Developmental Affairs program. Follow her on Twitter.

Anthony D. WilliamsAnthony D. Williams

Anthony D. Williams is a speaker, consultant and co-author of the groundbreaking bestseller Wikinomics and the recent follow-up MacroWikinomics: Rebooting Business and the World. He is currently a visiting fellow with the Munk School of Global Affairs at the University of Toronto and a senior fellow for innovation with the Lisbon Council in Brussels. As vice president of nGenera Insight, Anthony previously founded and led one of the world’s definitive investigations into the impact of Web 2.0 and wikinomics on the future of governance and democracy. His work has been featured in publications such as the Harvard Business Review, the Huffington Post, the Globe and Mail and BusinessWeek.

Darren HendersonDarren Henderson

Based in Toronto, Darren leads PwC Canada's Technology, InfoComm, and Entertainment & Media consulting practice at a national level. He holds responsibility for understanding market trends; developing thought leadership; and providing PwC's services to support client needs, with a current focus on digital transformation.
With over 16 years of experience in the telecom and entertainment sectors in both Canada and Asia Pacific, Darren has led the improvement of revenue growth, customer experience and cost reduction for various clients. Darren's leadership on digital transformation initiatives has involved the development of thought leadership, tools, and business strategies to assist clients as they transition various areas of their business to compete successfully in the digital arena. Some of these areas include:
Identifying and maximizing revenues through digital means;
Enhancing the customer experience through mobile / digital touch points; and
Leading projects to allow clients to maximize revenues through efficient and accurate content management across multiple platforms, products and transactions.
Darren holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree from Australia's Deakin University, and is a Chartered Accountant.

Dr. Jennifer ZelmerDr. Jennifer Zelmer

Dr. Jennifer Zelmer is the Senior Vice President, Clinical Adoption and Innovation at Canada Health Infoway. Prior to joining Infoway, she held a series of progressively responsible leadership positions in Canada and abroad, most recently as Chief Executive Officer of the International Health Terminology Standards Organization and Vice President, Research & Analysis at the Canadian Institute for Health Information. Dr. Zelmer received her PhD and her M.A. in Economics from McMaster University and her B.Sc. in Health Information Science from the University of Victoria. In addition to her role at Canada Health Infoway, she is the Editor-in-Chief of Healthcare Policy and is an Adjunct Faculty member at the University of Victoria. Dr. Zelmer also serves on a wide range of health-related advisory committees and boards.

Dr. Michael WeschDr. Michael Wesch

Dr. Michael Wesch, Associate Professor of Cultural Anthropology, Kansas State University. Dubbed “the explainer” by Wired magazine, his videos on culture, technology, education, and information have been viewed by millions and translated into more than 15 languages. Winner of the Wired Magazine Rave Award, the John Culkin Award for Outstanding Praxis in Media Ecology, several teaching awards, including the 2008 CASE/Carnegie U.S. Professor of the Year for Doctoral and Research Universities. Michael was recently named an Emerging Explorer by National Geographic.

Kunal Gupta, CEO, Polar Mobile, is a market leader in launching innovative mobile applications with major media publishers for millions of their consumers in the rapidly changing communications landscape. Chair of the Board of Directors for the Impact Entrepreneurship Group, Kunal has been recognized by the United Nations as a Global Citizen.

Jennifer StoddartJennifer Stoddart

Jennifer Stoddart, Jennifer Stoddart was appointed Canada's Privacy Commissioner by the Governor in Council, effective December 1, 2003, on unanimous resolutions adopted by both the House of Commons and the Senate. Since taking on this role, Commissioner Stoddart has overseen a number of important investigations, including those concerning the privacy policies and practices of the popular social networking site Facebook and a massive data breach at U.S. retail giant TJX, which owns Winners and HomeSense stores in Canada. The Commissioner also led efforts to help private sector organizations understand their obligations under the Personal Information and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA) in the first years after the legislation came into force. She is working to promote online privacy for young people through the Office’s new website, www.youthprivacy.ca.

Kevin NewmanKevin Newman

One year ago at Canada 3.0, the former Canadian news anchor announced his sabbatical from conventional media to spend a year exploring the potential of digital media. While pursuing his interest, Newman has also co-produced two documentaries debuting in May, is Executive-Producer of a television series filming this summer, and has advised various federal agencies and artistic organizations on their digital strategies.
